Taylor Swift, who recently released her 10th studio album called Midnights, is known for hiding creative Easter eggs in her music videos for fans to decode. The video for “Anti-Hero,” which dropped at the end of October, is chock-full of symbolism as Swift showcases a vulnerable side of herself and addresses her biggest insecurities through amusing imagery. There are a lot of hidden elements in the video, so let’s get started!
Facing Her Inner Demons – In the beginning of the video, ghosts chase Swift through an old house as she sings, “When my depression works the graveyard shift / All of the people I’ve ghosted stand there in the room.” It’s a metaphor for the urge to be antisocial while dealing with mental health issues.
Too Big to Hang Out – In the next scene, a giant Swift joins her friends for a dinner party as she refers to herself as a “monster on the hill” and as “too big to hang out” with her friends. She attempts to join the party in the corner but the rest of the guests quickly run out of the room and leave her on her own as she tries to enjoy a nice dinner that’s too small for her. This scene represents Swift’s paranoia about people not wanting to remain friends with her due to her fame and status.
Partying With Herself – Instead of trying to join her friends who have just fled the dinner party, Swift parties with a different, bad-influence version of herself in a red outfit that reminisces of the earlier days in her career. The two get up to various shenanigans in the old house and end up in the bathroom where the original Swift weighs herself on a scale while her red evil twin shakes her head in disapproval. This scene represents Swift’s battle with an eating disorder and the criticism she’s long faced for how her body looks.
The Funeral Scene – Perhaps the most entertaining part of the entire video is the funeral scene during which Swift sings, “I have this dream my daughter-in-law kills me for the money / She thinks I left them in the will.” In actuality, her will states that she’s left most of the money to Meredith Grey Swift, Olivia Benson Swift, and Benjamin Button Swift – her cats’ names in real life. The remaining 13 cents are left to her children. The number 13 is a reference to Swift’s birthday (December 13), and lucky number.
No Secret Encoded Messages – Swift writes in her will that there is “no secret encoded message that means something else” when her son Chad wonders if the 13 cents she left them is actually not meant to be taken at face value. Swift included this segment as a way to poke fun at her fans who constantly overthink every line in her music, even when there’s no hidden meaning behind it.
Is Kimber Actually Kim K? – Another major Easter egg in the funeral scene was Swift’s choice to name her daughter-in-law “Kimber,” which many fans believe is a nod to Swift’s very public feud with Kim Kardashian in 2016. As another testament to this theory, Swift’s son Chad is revealed to be recording their conversation during the funeral, which is a reference to Kim K recording a private phone call between her and Swift.
