Sissy – Sissy is an Australian horror-comedy film that follows social media influencer Cecilia as she runs into her childhood best friend Emma for the first time in a decade. The two were once inseparable until a girl named Alex entered Emma’s life. Emma invites both Cecilia and Alex along on her bachelorette weekend trip at a cabin in the mountains, during which Alex turns Cecilia’s life into an absolute nightmare. Rotten Tomatoes gives Sissy a Tomatometer score of 97% and an Audience Score of 74%. The film stars Aisha Dee as Cecilia, Hannah Barlow as Emma, and Emily De Margheriti as Alex.
Hellbender – In Hellbender, a teenage girl named Izzy lives in a house in the woods with her mother, where they spend their time making music together. When Izzy meets a girl her age named Amber, her family’s dark history with witchcraft is revealed, causing a fissure between her and her mother. The film stars Zelda Adams as Izzy and Toby Poser as her mother. The two are also a real-life mother-daughter duo! Rotten Tomatoes gives the dark coming-of-age film a Tomatometer score of 97% and an Audience Score of 54%.
The Innocents – The Innocents is a Norwegian film about a group of young children who reveal that they have dark powers. Several Rotten Tomatoes critics described the film as being not for the faint of heart and even delving into “amoral terrain.” One critic named Federico Furzan asserts that Hollywood isn’t bold enough to produce a film like this one, if that gives you an idea of how cautious to be around this film. Rotten Tomatoes gives The Innocents a Tomatometer score of 96% and an Audience Score of 72%. PS. do not watch if you’re a cat lover. You’ve been warned.
Saloum – Saloum is a Senegalese horror-thriller film about three mercenaries – Chaka, Rafa, and Minuit – known as the Bangui Hyenas who get shot down after fleeing a coup. Before they can attempt to escape back to Senegal, they are forced to lay low and hide their stolen stash of gold while they repair their plane. They retreat to a holiday camp in the Sine-Saloum region and attempt to blend in as best they can with the rest of the guests, but it’s soon revealed that Chaka brought them all there for a reason, and his past soon comes back to haunt him with a vengeance. Saloum stars Yann Gael as Chaka, Roger Sallah as Rafa, and Mentor Ba as Minuit. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a Tomatometer score of 96% and an Audience Score of 70%.
X – Set in the 1970s, X is a rehashing of the classic slasher film trope. A group of young filmmakers travels to rural Texas to stay on an elderly couple’s farm property while they make an adult film entitled The Farmer’s Daughters. The elderly couple catches them in the act and begins stalking them. Rotten Tomatoes gives X a Tomatometer score of 94% and an Audience Score of 70%. The film was produced by the same studio that made Hereditary, so you know it’s going to be scary.
