Since Elon Musk officially purchased Twitter on Oct. 27, 2022, things have gotten rather interesting on the microblogging platform. So far he’s implemented his Twitter Blue idea (which involves charging a fee for the infamous blue verification check mark), laid off half of his workforce, and fired many of his top executives – to name just a few things.
But out of all of the recent changes, Twitter Blue has arguably had the most amusing aftermath. As of mid-November, any average Twitter user could spend just $8 a month to obtain the verification check mark and begin parodying practically any public figure or company. But as quickly as the fiasco began, Twitter authorities paused the program stating that it would be back on Nov. 29 to ensure that it is “rock solid” (in the words of Musk).
These are some of the most amusing parody tweets we’ve seen so far:
On Nov. 10, a parody account of pharmaceutical corporation Eli Lilly and Company tweeted that insulin, a diabetes medication notorious for being prohibitively expensive, would now be free of charge. Twitter removed the tweet more than six hours later, but by then it had already been viewed millions of times, and the real Eli Lilly expressed concern that it had tarnished their reputation.
Also on Nov. 10, a fake account posing as the Chiquita banana corporation tweeted that they had just overthrown the Brazilian government, to which the “real” Chiquita tweeted in response, “We apologize to those who have been served a misleading message from a fake Chiquita account. We have not overthrown a government since 1954.” Of course, no one can really be sure if that account is real either…
That same afternoon, a fake Pepsi account succinctly tweeted “Coke is better.” Pepsi likely suffered from a dip in sales after that but as it stands, a lot of people already agree that Coke is indeed the superior carbonated beverage. Sorry Pepsi.
An Apple parody account tweeted, “Introducing Apple Air+. A brand new, innovative group of atoms specifically tuned to enhance your Apple Store experience. Now required for entry into Apple stores globally. We think you’re going to love it. $9.99/30m.” The point of this tweet was, of course, to poke fun at Apple for its infamous sales strategy of planned obsolescence. We’re inclined to say that the real Apple Inc. deserved that one.
On Nov. 11, a fake SpaceX Twitter account tweeted that the company (which is also owned by Elon Musk), would cease all future missions and pool resources to look for climate solutions on planet earth rather than in outer space. We can only imagine how Elon reacted to seeing that one.
